about

There is woodland close to where I live, on the Rame Peninsula in south-east Cornwall, between the village of Kingsand and the grounds of Mount Edgcumbe House, that I have always loved to explore. The paths wind on hillsides with peaks and troughs where the calls of birds and the sound of the sea echoes through the trees casting webs or nets of weaving sound. This is the place that inspired me to create Piano Net.

The music of Piano Net explores 6 of the 7 ancient Greek modes. Each mode can seem to describe a particular time of day or a season or feeling from the weather which in this part of the world can be calm and mellow or howling winds and lashing waves. The modes (Ionian (major), Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian and Aeolian (minor)) each creates a unique series of harmonies which help to articulate these feelings. I used a felted piano to try to create the illusion of the sound being slightly muffled by the trees.

The paintings illustrate the shape the modes create for me. I used a long delay system that feeds back into itself over time to remind me of those weaving nets of sound. I wanted the series of paintings to reflect the fading repeats of the echo system.

Both the music and the paintings were created during the covid-19 lockdown when I couldn’t visit the places I love. I could almost see the woodland from my studio window. I would look out to Plymouth Sound and imagine being there; try to conjure the moods and the sounds of the woods. It helped to keep me sane but there is a sense of longing that, I think, permeates the pieces.

The 8 paintings are featured in a full sized booklet that is a bonus download for purchasers of the album
